An Easter Mashup for your Friday

So, I’ll admit, I find it really fun to theologize pop songs. Because let’s be honest, anybody can find meaning in an Indigo Girls song, or in the latest Mumford album. But finding some depth to Taylor Swift is a more interesting challenge. (Also, just imagine how serious I would be if I didn’t mix in pop songs. I think I’d get on my own nerves if I didn’t lighten it up with some fluff here and there.) Today on my run, one of my favorites song mashups came up in the shuffle. I’m a huge fan of mashups, probably because it’s the musical version of the way my mind works, taking two things and finding new resonance between them. I totally wish I was Anna Kendrick’s Beca and could mash beats on my laptop, but alas, here I am typing about theology on my desktop instead. Anyhow…

I’ve always found this mashup to be kind of a sassy Eastertide anthem. It’s called Shut Up and Let Me Live Forever, a mashup of the Ting Ting’s “Shut Up and Let Me Go” and Oasis’ “Live Forever.” Yes, I know. You already realize it is going to be awesome, and you are correct. Give it a listen. I’ve even shared the lyrics below, if you’re interested. Notice a little garden/dewy morning rain allusion to the tomb. Ponder the line “we see things they’ll never see.” And then imagine the Ting Tings singing to Death itself.

Oh, love. Hold this!

Happy Friday. :)

Maybe I don’t really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly
Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks you to the bone

Maybe I just want to fly
I want to live I don’t want to die
Maybe I just want to breath
Maybe I just don’t believe
Maybe you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Maybe I don’t really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly
Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks you to the bone

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We see things they’ll never see
You and I are gonna live forever//

Shut up and let me go
This hurts, what I can’t show
For the last time you had me in bits
Now shut up and let me go
For fear of living in regret I changed this one when we first met
Now oh so easily you’re over me
Gone is love
It’s me that ought to be moving on
You’re not adorable
I was something unignorable.
I ain’t freakin’, I ain’t fakin’ this
I ain’t freakin’, I ain’t fakin’ this
I ain’t freakin’, I ain’t fakin’ this
Shut up and let me go, hey!
Oh, love, hold, this.
Hey!
