Should church be fun?
Here’s a question to start your Wednesday morning. A friend and I had a lively discussion the other day about whether or not church should be fun. What do you think?

Hmm…
So I grew up charismatic during the 70’s and early 80’s. Church WAS fun: the music, the personalities, the fellowship, Aunt Maggie’s Sunday School stories, stories of the old-time pentecostal revivals of the early 1900’s.
I had a good friend in high school who was catholic. Their church was NOT fun. Liturgy and checking the watch getting stressed out about missing the first part of the Cowboys games.
He came to church with me a few times and I think he enjoyed the liveliness. I grew up to disdain the aloofness in my church and appreciate the solemnity of liturgy in his Catholicism.
Should church be fun? Yes – to a point. We should laugh together and be in each other’s lives. Our worship should be something we find joy in. It should be expressive, but it should never become a spectacle. When the amusement of church becomes the attraction, it has gone too far.

It’s only when we take God seriously that we can start having some real fun at church.

this question has made me think. i really hope to be a part of something one day wherein i really enjoy myself, i really enjoy the experience, i really have something i take from the experience. can church provide these things – i think so…is it the first place i look to for the experience of such things – probably not. but i think i am ok with that.
